To have my timing belt, tensioner and water pump changed. Not expecting good things.

this will be expensive , 600-650 pounds is my guess.

Hellcat swap

Things to expect when expecting:
A large repair bill
Happy pistons that are no longer in fear of punching valves.
So yeah..... you’re right. There’s not much in it for you . :(
I suppose you could have them replace the drive belts while they’re in there, since they’ll already have them off.
That and the new coolant would be nice, I guess. Two serviceable items you wouldn’t have to worry about for a while.

Think about how many £80 cars you could get for that.

I don’t think there’d be any room for me if I put a hellcat in it...

Coolant and aux belt will get done too for sure. May as well have everything done and hopefully have a trouble free 5 years till it needs doing again...

Lots. Although that £80 has cost over £300 so far and it isn’t road legal yet.

I’m estimating between £400-£500. These quotes are only from main dealers, then I’ll try some good indie garages.

Put it in the back.

I like the way you think. It’d be a modern replacement for the Clio V6. Hell they even share a basic platform and a few parts.

Jump it ;)

There will be no jumping, he needs this car haha.

You live in the land of £80 cars. Buy another one and jump it ;)

One day haha.

Not with that attitude there ain’t

In case you were curious the nearest dealer quoted £420 for tensioner, timing belt, aux belt and water pump. £345 if I dont change the pump.

i was WAY out.

Access is good on my car so it’s not as pricey as most. Our other Renault did cost about £650 though.

That doesn’t sound unreasonable.
![]() 06/23/2015 at 09:21 |

So that’s 120 in parts leaving 225 for what ever additional tools you need to buy to do it yourself....
Do not fear the timing belt!
![]() 06/23/2015 at 09:27 |

Yeah it’s not too bad, especially for a main dealer. I’m going to shop around a bit more though.

It’s a faff of a job without a lift so I’m not sure I want to do it.

I don’t know how it is on a Twingo, I did it on my Chevy Aveo in my apt parking lot, needed
a jackstand to support one corner because you take the wheel off for access then a trolley jack to support the engine because you have to remove a motor mount. I cheated and got a cam pulley lock tool so the actual belt swap was easy.

Seems pretty similar to mine. It’s certainly doable but I’m fairly lazy. Haven’t done a lot of heavily practical stuff since the nightmare turbo swap on my old Fiat. Someone made a pretty excellent guide on how to do the job on a Clio (same engine and chassis as my car) so I know how it goes together. http://www.donkennedy.co.uk/Clio/Clio.htm

Yeah, someone on the aveoforum made a guide for my old car that convinced me I could do this myself as well.
I never did see the end of the turbo swap, last I saw you had it out and were ordering a new cartridge. What went wrong?
![]() 06/23/2015 at 09:58 |

It turned out the engine wasn’t feeding enough oil to the turbo (despite fresh oil, filter and oil feed lines) which we can only guess is due to sludging blocking the oil galleys in the block. So the new turbo begun to die too. I traded it in while it still sort of ran for the Twingo, couldn’t get it above 50mph on the way to the dealer and it burned nearly a liter of oil in a couple hundred miles because it leaked through the turbo oil seals.

That sucks.

Yeah but I love my new car so it worked out okay in the end. Got a pretty decent trade in price too.
